After reading all the wonderful reviews of this CD and listening to it umpteen times, there really isn''t much for me to say, since everyone who gave it five stars says it so eloquently. If anything, it''s historic and will stand the test of time. Ahh, Milt Jackson is on the top of my list. I don''t know what it is about him, no matter what he plays, there is so much feeling and he''s the only artist I could listen to all day long.

Hawk was always fierce and competitive when he had colleagues of the top rank. This is one of those occasions--a great recording, flawed only by short duration. This late-period, hard-hitting Hawkins is my favorite variety; Jackson, Ray Bryant, et al., are in fine form.

Usually when there are sound samples on a product page I simply refer to those and let folks make up their own minds. In the case of this album the sound samples - while adequate - do not begin to convey the beauty of any of the tracks on this all-too-short album.

There is something about the way that Milt and Coleman connect that makes this album pure magic. Prior to this I had always thought the best paring between Milt and a tenor saxophonist was he and Lucky Thompson. This album has caused me to rethink that.

Of course it''s not just Milt and Coleman who make this album special. It''s also the solid rhythm section led by Tommy Flanagan on piano with Kenny Burrell''s incredible guitar work, Eddie Jones on bass and Connie Kay on drums. In fact for this album the only other drummer I can think of who would have played with the same sensitivity is Ed Thigpen. Overall, the rhythm section - in my opinion - is as responsible for the musical magic as Milt and Coleman.

This album was recorded in NYC for Atlantic on September 12, 1958. There were actually eight tracks recorded for this album, but two never made it onto the platter for come reason: Where Or When which remains unissued, and Prisoner Of Love for no reason that I can unearth. Regardless, the album as it stands is perfect to my ears.

Away from the MJQ, Milt Jackson often recorded in what could easily be tagged all-star groups, whether teaming up with John Coltrane, Ray Charles, or Wes Montgomery. Here his side kick is the father of the tenor sax himself, Coleman Hawkins, and the results are magnificent. Hawk is in great form, and the performance of everyone on his own STUFFY is terrific. CLOSE YOUR EYES gets a gorgeous ballad treatment, while GET HAPPY is a scorcher. The final two tracks are 12-bar blues, one slow, the other medium-up, and cap off a marvelous outing by two jazz giants - and a great rhythm section headed by pianist Tommy Flanagan and including guitarist Kenny Burrel. Definitely worth looking into.

This is the single album Japanese re-master of the "Bean Bags" album and as such has just the six tunes and a running time of just over 35 minutes. Unlike some of the other Japanese re-issues this has the original sleeve notes by Nat Hentoff on the back, which is just as well because the rest of the notes are in Japanese. The programming is the usual mixture of "standards" with Coleman Hawkins contributing "Stuffy" and Jackson "Sandra''s Blues" and "Indian Blues". What matters most is not the paucity of running time, but some sublime Coleman Hawkins playing, and Milt Jackson sounding on top of his creative game. It''s also easy to overlook the contribution made by Kenny Burrell to the album, helping to fill out the sounds and add some accomplished embellishments- together with Tommy Flanagan. All in all, well worth the money even if Hentoff''s florid sleeve-notes now read as being overblown and prolix. Utterly enjoyable.
